Multifactorial diseases and viral infections
Multifactorial diseases include both infectious and non-infectious diseases of the adult bees and brood.
Many of these diseases can be reduced or prevented by breeding bees with high vitality and strong hygienic behaviour, as well as through proper management of the colonies.
Nosema: an intestinal parasite.
Tracheal mite: a respiratory system parasite
Amoeba disease: symptoms similar to those of Nosema
Paralysis during honeydew flow: a deficiency disease, constipation caused by feeding on pollen
Dysentery: diarrhoea
Sac brood: a viral disease
Foulbrood: a bacterial infection of the brood, which is a notifiable disease
Chalk brood / Stone brood: a fungal disease. BienenWohl® provides a very effective treatment against this brood disease. Bad cases of chalk brood will result in heavy brood losses. This disease is closely linked to bee genetics, as well as to the environment and the location of the colony.
The mummified larvae can cause problems for pollen collection, as they often cannot be distinguished from pollen grains.
These brood impurities are a matter of great concern from the point of view of foodstuffs regulations.
BienenWohl®, when applied in small quantities, is also effective against these brood diseases.
