Varoosis
One of the most serious threats to a bee colony affected by varoosis is the increased likelihood of disease. The greatest danger is not the number of mites itself, but the fact that mites are constantly transferring the microorganisms they carry with the haemolymph (the colourless fluid running through the entire body of the bee) of the diseased bees.
If the natural immune system of the bees is in good condition, the colony will be healthy and able to overcome infection without problems. But the bee's immune system is quite delicate and collapses quickly, leading to sudden mortality of the colony.
Insect diseases are notoriously difficult to cure. Preventive measures, implemented at the right time, are the only way of ensuring healthy overwintered colonies. Treating with BienenWohl® is highly effective in activating the biological mechanisms that protect the bees.
Viral diseases: There are innumerable viruses that are transmitted by the varroa mite. As mite numbers increase in a colony, so does the incidence of these secondary infections. The colony's immune system becomes weakened, and eventually fails.
Effects: Bee activity within the colony is disrupted. There is a decline in colony activities that are related to the bees' life-cycle, such as cell inspection and cleaning. Nurse bees fail to look after the brood, and guard bees become unable to protect the colony.
Visible signs of varoosis: Deformed body parts, such as the wings affected by the "deformed wing virus", as well as deformed legs and a shortened abdomen (dwarfism). Rapid collapse of colonies, caused by the "acute paralysis virus (APV)", a fast-acting virus that paralyses the bees.
Note: Bees affected by varoosis lose 0.1% of their body weight every 2 hours.
